GottaClimb Freeze-Resistant High-Altitude Hydration System
GottaClimb LLC Launches an R&D Initiative to Commercialize NASA-Engineered Freeze-Resistant Hydration Technology for High-Altitude Mountaineering
Santa Fe, NM | 02/16/2026 – GottaClimb LLC today announced the launch of a new research and development initiative focused on adapting NASA-engineered technology into a commercially available, freeze-resistant, high-altitude personal hydration system designed specifically for mountaineers operating in extreme cold environments.
The project aims to address a persistent and potentially life-threatening challenge in high-altitude climbing: maintaining adequate hydration in sub-freezing conditions.
At high elevations, climbers routinely face temperatures well below freezing, high winds, and extended exposure that can quickly freeze traditional hydration systems. When hydration hoses and reservoirs freeze, climbers are often forced to stop, remove gloves, access packs, or melt snow—actions that consume valuable time and increase exposure risk. As a result, many mountaineers under-hydrate on summit days and during alpine pushes, contributing to dehydration-related complications such as acute mountain sickness (AMS), decreased cognitive function, reduced physical performance, frostbite risk, and in severe cases, life-threatening medical emergencies.
A Technology Transfer Approach
GottaClimb LLC is exploring the adaptation of NASA-developed thermal management and freeze-mitigation technologies originally engineered for use in extreme aerospace environments. By integrating advanced insulation systems, active and passive heating elements, along with energy-efficient thermal control strategies, the company aims to develop a chest-mounted, freeze-resistant hydration platform that can function reliably in sustained sub-zero, high-altitude conditions.
“Our mission is simple: help climbers hydrate safely when conditions make it hardest to do so,” said Sean Lehman, Founder of GottaClimb LLC. “Summit day is often the most dangerous day of a climb. If a hydration system fails due to freezing, performance declines and risk increases. By leveraging NASA-engineered thermal technologies, we believe we can fundamentally change how climbers manage hydration in extreme cold.”
The company plans to pursue additional partnerships and funding opportunities, including potential federal innovation programs, to accelerate prototyping, field testing, and commercialization.
Designed for Real-World Mountain Use and Field Tested to the Summit of Mount Everest!
The envisioned system will be:
- Freeze-resistant in extreme sub-zero temperatures
- Optimized for high-altitude environments
- Ergonomically integrated under outerwear to preserve thermal efficiency
- Energy-efficient for extended alpine use
- Engineered for reliability during summit pushes and alpine-style ascents
Unlike traditional backpack-mounted reservoirs that are exposed to ambient air and wind chill, the GottaClimb freeze-resistant hydration system concept emphasizes strategic body-proximity placement and integrated thermal management to reduce freezing risk while maintaining accessibility.
Addressing a Critical Safety Gap
- Dehydration reduces blood volume and impairs circulation, making it harder for your body to distribute heat and leaving you more susceptible to cold-related illnesses. Dehydration is also known as a contributor to altitude-related illness and impaired decision-making in mountaineering. In alpine environments, small performance losses can compound into dangerous situations.
Cold air is dry, causing moisture loss through breathing and increased urine production, often without the sensation of thirst.Staying hydrated is crucial for preventing hypothermia in cold weather. Water regulates body temperature, aids in circulation, and ensures efficient metabolism to generate heat.
By improving hydration reliability, GottaClimb aims to reduce preventable medical incidents in the climbing community and support safer performance in extreme conditions.
How Hydration Protects Against Frostbite
- Maintains Blood Volume: Adequate hydration ensures your blood volume is sufficient to flow smoothly, which is essential for transporting heat from your warm core to your hands, feet, nose, and ears.
- Prevents Reduced Circulation: Dehydration can lead to poor circulation, which increases the risk of cold-weather injuries. When you are dehydrated, your body may struggle to distribute warmth to your skin and underlying tissues.
- Supports Temperature Regulation: Water is vital for the body's thermoregulation systems. If you are dehydrated, your body's ability to maintain a stable temperature is compromised, making you more vulnerable to both frostbite and hypothermia.
- Reduces Cellular Risk: At a microscopic level, frostbite involves the formation of ice crystals that lead to cellular dehydration and electrolyte shifts. Maintaining overall hydration helps keep cells and tissues more resilient against these shifts.
